It feels strange to talk about remote places in Madeira, especially nowadays when the infrastructure is top-notch. But there was a time when the parish of Curral das Freiras was pretty isolated – or perhaps rather, protected. It is one of few places in Madeira totally hidden from the sea, located in an old volcanic crater. Today there is a relatively new road leading there, the old one is abandoned. Serpentine roads with amazing views.
The best view point, or miradouro as they are named in Portugal, is Eira do Serrado. From here you have an astounding view over the valley, the small villages and the grand mountains surrounding them. Enjoy a photographic tour of the parish of Curral das Freiras!
